LAND
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We acknowledge that we are located on Treaty 2 land and respect this land as the un-ceded traditional territories of the Anishinaabe, Dene, Dakota, Cree, and Oji-Cree Peoples, and homeland of the Red River Metis.

We acknowledge the Indigenous history that has been hosted on this land and we honour it. We do not forget the brutality of the past or the impacts of it on our present. We acknowledge that the events that have taken place on this land should never be forgotten.

OUR LOCATION

We are located at the Brandon Riverbank Discovery Centre alongside Brandon tourism. Both are nonprofit organizations dedicated to serving our communities by providing ecological and economic opportunities for our city. Out our viewing window, you will see a prairie riverbank vista hosting vibrant Manitoban wildlife. The Riverbank grounds have been the supportive host of many cultural and community events such as Truth and Reconciliation Week and Indigenous Peoples day.

Indigenous Tourism is a budding new tourism sector that focuses on sharing Indigenous ways of being to the public as a way of changing perspectives and preserving language, culture and community. It is a mode of Indigenous reclamation of narrative in both ancient and modern history and a way of sharing this history with other cultures. Indigenous tourism is led by Indigenous voices and perspectives to uplift and empower communities.

It is important to us that our materials are Indigenous-sourced and Indigenous-approved so that we are able to provide the most culturally sensitive and authentic experience possible. Elders, knowledge keepers and community members are consulted in the creation of our materials and most kindly share with us their knowledge so that we may provide it to you. We want to create an experience safe for curious and open-hearted attempts at learning and connection between cultures.

Our goal is to make Brandon Indigenous Tourism a way for the Brandon community and travellers to connect with Indigenous events, businesses and organizations in the city of Brandon and to boost engagement and support of local Indigenous activity.

OUR PLANS

We are working our hardest to create accessible educational materials, tours, audio tours and other ways of connecting that you can engage and learn from. We want to create the best learning experience we possibly can.

In the future, we want our program to develop and be able to financially support monthly Indigenous-led cultural workshops for the community. Our goal being the preservation, sharing and strengthening of community within our local Indigenous culture.

Our model is to maintain a for-community,

not-for-profit mode of organization. We want our information to be as locally-sourced as possible,

centering

Indigenous voices right here in our city. We aim to create a consistently available platform and space for Indigenous perspectives to be shared and heard.

We are in the process of developing a podcast featuring the history of the land that our city rests on. Information will be sourced from Elders in the Brandon Community !

Our project this summer is to create an audio experience available to you as a self-led guide through Brandon's Indigenous history as you walk along the Riverbank or around Brandon.

AUDIO TOURS COMING SOON!

Different topics will be released throughout the summer: our first topic will be about the power of Storytelling as an Indigenous method of passing along history and will feature some of the original stories that were told on this land.
