BRANDON'S HISTORY

Part of what Brandon Indigenous Tourism aims to do is tackle the project of creating historical materials about the area of Brandon to make accessible to the public. So far, these materials have been made into bite-sized social media pieces for you to read and ingest. Check them out below!

INDIGENOUS HISTORY MONTH

These materials were produced for Indigenous History month which is the month of June. This month is a celebration of culture, traditions, languages, art and diversity of Indigenous peoples and ancestors. It is an acknowledgement of what Indigenous peoples have done to shape Canada and what future generations will do. It is an acknowledgement of the past, the pain and injustices that have been done to our Indigenous culture and peoples and the strength that has been shown in response.

Indigenous history month takes place in June as it is the month of the summer solstice. This time of year is sacred to Indigenous peoples and is a time for giving thanks to Mother Earth, the Creator and Grandfather Sun for growth, light and abundance. Indigenous Peoples day takes place annually on the summer solstice as a celebration of this.

The Brandon Indigenous Tourism platform was developed to uplift our local Indigenous populations. During Indigenous history month we capitalize on this boost in interest from the public eye and use this opportunity to share local events in the community, educational materials and ways to get involved and reflect as an individual. This month we ask people to amplify Indigenous voices, support Indigenous businesses and seek out education about Indigenous history from Indigenous sources.

Indigenous history month is shared with the TSLGBTQ+ population as a month of empowerment, visibility and sharing history. All individuals under the sun are sacred and deserving of love, respect and acceptance. We honour and respect our Two-Spirited individuals as an essential part of our community.
